Want to have the tone of Ace Frehley or Michael Schenker?

Then don’t use a thick pick, but a thinner one, like Herco Flex 75 or Dunlop Standard Nylon .88 mm. There’s no chance in hell that you will be able to achieve that biting upper mid‐range emphasis with a thick pick. Enough said.

By the way, don’t angle the pick too much, or you will get a mushy attack that’s certainly not a trademark of these guitarists. For the record, Ace holds his pick with the pad of his index finger rather than the side, naturally leading to a relatively small pick angle.

The Pros and Cons of Matroska

Some years ago I decided to use Matroska as the container format for everything, including audio‐only files. Using a unified container format would simplify the metadata handling, among other things. Unfortunately, while the whole idea looked good on paper, it turned out that life isn’t that simple. It is now 2016, and the support for Matroska as the container for audio‐only files (.mka) is still microscopic, if at all existent. So I have decided to revert to using “native” FLAC, MP3 and MP4.

ID3Tag, MP4Tags and VTags

Joining my collection of simple Perl tag editors are ID3Tag, MP4Tags and VTags, that let you edit ID3v1/ID3v2, iTunes and Vorbis tags respectively. ID3Tag also supports editing of the ID3v2 tag in DSF (DSD Stream File) files. I have been using these editors “in-house” for many years, and I have now decided to release them to the public.
